Our Activities

Home Page

The following are typical activities:

  1. A heritage magazine, launched in 1961, published twice annually, is free to members and is also available from Dummer's News in West Street, the Tourist Office and the Cowdray shop.
  2. A programme of public lectures, on subjects of local interest and concern, have taken place monthly since 1961.
  3. A lavishly illustrated town trail leaflet, now in its third season, points out significant buildings in the town and interprets their history. This was considered preferable to boards, which can be vandalised, and are difficult to alter as new research becomes available. Currently, four boards in the town are inaccurate.
  4. About a dozen inexpensive leaflets are available from the Tourist Office. They are regularly updated, and cover local celebrities (eg: H G Wells), local places (eg: St Ann's Hill, Cowdray), Tudor and Georgian Architecture and other aspects of history.
  5. Heritage walks have been organised each summer for at least the last ten years and continue this year.
  6. The Civic Trust's 'Heritage Open days' have been celebrated for the last 3 years and will continue this September.
  7. The 'Midhurst in Living Memory ' project, for which lottery funds have been received, started with a public exhibition and lecture and will culminate in 2010 with a CD and an illustrated book.
  8. The Society monitors all planning applications concerning listed buildings in Midhurst and follows them up, intervening where alterations are considered unsuitable.
  9. The Society is currently working on a directory of all listed buildings in Midhurst, which it expects to complete in about two year's time.
  10. The Society has succeeded in obtaining Listed Building status for two ancient bridges, one in the Wharf area of Midhurst and the other at Sutton.
  11. The Society organises occasional social functions
