This hour-long talk will introduce the fascinating figure of Edward James, founder of West Dean College of Arts and Conservation in West Sussex. Although he saw himself primarily as a poet, James was a noted patron of the arts who supported some of the most prominent cultural figures of his day, including Salvador Dalí, René Magritte and Leonora Carrington. As well as describing his ballet commissions, his friendships with the Surrealists, his time in Hollywood, the talk will detail James’ time in Mexico, a country he made his home and where began to construct radical architecture in the jungle.
