20 June 2024 - Dr Dawn Cansfield - In Search of Elizabeth Barlow

By piecing together Mrs Barlow's story from historical sources, including letters she wrote in the 1800s, a story has emerged of a local woman who was a passionate seeker and sharer of knowledge of the past people of Sussex and Hampshire who both consulted and was consulted by some of the major antiquarian/archaeological figures of her time.  Furthermore, her letters reveal many fascinating insights into the people and daily life of Midhurst in the 19th century.

Dr Dawn Cansfield is a mortuary archaeologist and visiting lecturer at the University of Winchester with a particular interest in prehistoric burial practices and what they can tell us about people of the past.
