20 June: Art Nouveau in Architecture
Ian showed us slides of some stunning buildings with Art Nouveau features, the majority in Brussels and Paris, but the fact is that this elaborate, ornate and organic style evolved from the English Arts & Crafts movement. It never caught on in England, but it was picked up by Rennie Mackintosh in Scotland. Under Mackintosh, the style continued to evolve into a much simpler form that became known as Art Deco. But that's another story - which we hope to hear about when Ian returns next year.
