From Jekyll to Jellicoe: The Story of Sutton Place

Professional gardener John Humphris was head gardener at Borde Hill Gardens for 17 years, and then garden manager at Sutton Place for nearly 20 years until he retired. In 2009 he received the RHS Victoria Medal of Honour for his services to horticulture. He is the RHS Ornamental Show Judge, and is on the RHS Woody Plant Trials sub-committee, the Bursaries Committee and the Awards Committee. For ten years he was a tour leader of the Gardens and Flora of Japan, and for 25 years, John was an administrator to the Professional Gardeners Guild traineeship scheme. This scheme offers 3-year full time practical training courses to prospective gardeners in historic and heritage gardens throughout the UK.

John is chairman of Easebourne Garden and Allotment Society. He and his wife Jean have lived in Easebourne since his retirement.
