      <image:title>Circular Walks - Circular Walks around Midhurst</image:title>
<image:caption>Michelle Facer In this excellent book, Michelle Facer brings us eight circular walks that start in the Market Square in Midhurst. The first half of the book covers shorter walks of between five and ten kilometres, but this increase to walks of seventeen and eighteen kilometres in the second half. Michelle offers extensions and short cuts for her walks so that you can personalise them for the amount of time (and energy!) that you have available. Michelle has done a wonderful job in providing both maps and instructions which are both detailed and easy to follow. In addition to taking delight in the countryside, Michelle is a talented photographer, and this book is filled with beautiful images from the town and the surrounding countryside. <image:caption>Vicki Harrison Coat on Coat off West Feet is a personal memoir of how Midhurst resident Vicki Harrison found walking in the South Downs gave her a positive energy, self-confidence, inner strength and passion for walking. After overcoming the trauma of life-changing surgery which left her having to relearn how to walk, Vicki shares an emotional and heart-warming journey about how she fought her physical and mental demons through her diagnosis. As Vicki’s health improved, she trained and completed in two ultra marathons, an 800 mile Artic virtual challenge, and hundreds of training miles, raising money and awareness for charities within a 14 month period. Vicki relieves her most memorable walks, sharing her experiences, memories, sights and sounds with her readers, encouraging them to get out in the countryside and experience what being outdoors in the beautiful South Downs can offer. Vicki reminds us that even when times are tough and seem impossible, with sheer strength and determination, you can push your boundaries to points you never thought were possible. Never give up, put one foot in front of the other and you can achieve remarkable things. <image:title>Midhurst Post Office - A History of the Post Office in Midhurst</image:title>
<image:caption>Claire Nicholas Midhurst born author and heritage researcher Claire, has a personal connection with Midhurst Post Office, as several members of her family have worked there. Claire summarizes the development and location of the postal service in Midhurst, from its early days at long forgotten sites, such as The Spread Eagle and the Co-op to its current location on the Grange Road. Her account of the history of the Post Office is detailed and includes meticulous research on postal rates and the design changes of postage stamps. The book is well illustrated with photos of staff, Post Office sites and post boxes through the ages. Her account is enriched by personal memories and stories from employees (including some passed down from previous generations), of their work lives and their lives outside work, which draws the reader in. If you are interested in the history of the Post Office and or in people's memories of Midhurst, then this is a book to add to your collection. <image:title>Cowdray - Cowdray</image:title>
<image:caption>Matilda Reid, Tania Pons, David Ray and Julia Eastwood The story of Cowdray provides a fascinating historical insight into the Pearson family, charting its progress from Weetman Dickinson Pearson, a leading industrialist and liberal politician, who was created a baronet in 1894; raised to the peerage as Baron Cowdray in 1910 before being elevated to a Viscountcy in 1917. Pearson bought the estate from the Eighth Earl of Egmont in 1909 and this beautifully illustrated book documents the other families who have owned the land surrounding the ruins since the first historical reference to Cowdray in the thirteenth century. The story comes right up to date with a description of the individual components of the Cowdray estate, including the Polo Club, the Golf Club, the Farm Shop and Cafe and how the estate is managed on a sustainable basis to ensure its survival for generations to come. Cowdray is available from the Cowdray Living Shop and the Midhurst Museum.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Katherine Talbot - Becoming Katherine Talbot</image:title>
<image:caption>Christoph Ribbat In 1935, when she was just fourteen years old, Ilse Gross fled Germany on her own. Seventeen years later, she published her first novel Fire in the Sun under her pen name, Kathrine Talbot, carefully concealing her German Jewish identity. Becoming Kathrine Talbot explores the life of a refugee who lost her parents and her sister in the Holocaust and who resisted telling their stories until it was almost too late. Only at the end of her life did she start to write about her family’s fate. Christoph Ribbat follows a nearly forgotten 20th century novelist from an Isle of Man internment camp to post-war Cornwall, New York, and California, and then to Midhurst in Sussex. She married an English painter Kit Barker and clashed with macho bohemians. She achieved literary fame before she fell back into obscurity. As Ilse Barker, she shared a close friendship with the American poet Elizabeth Bishop and in their extraordinary letters the two women talked about the mundane to the traumatic and everything in-between. Becoming Kathrine Talbot fuses a literary biography with a concise account of a German Jewish refugee’s experience in Britain. It presents an engrossing tale of creativity, joy, and pain. Ilse lived in The Old Cottage on Bexley Hill, three miles north of Midhurst, between the 1950s and the late 1980s when she moved to Pitsham Wood in Midhurst. <image:title>Peter Sydenham v4 - Midhurst Memoirs Vol 4 Hard Ending</image:title>
<image:caption>Peter Sydenham Hard Ending is the fourth and concluding volume of Peter Sydenham’s memoirs and follow the years 1944 to 1950. Three-and-a-half-year-old Peter Sydenham was evacuated to Midhurst after his road in London had been bombed during the blitz in late 1940. At first, Peter lived without his mother in a room in the St Ann’s Hill building, but when Sheep Lane was hit by a bomb in 1943, he was forced to move to Easebourne and then to Red Lion Street before moving back to London when the war was over. The massive Allied sea-based invasion from England took place on D-Day 6 June 1944. From then on German forces in Europe were on a hard fought, slow retreat. Midhurst experienced several days of military movement to reach the departure points along the Southern Coast. Reports came in about the severe battles, and atrocities carried out by the Germans. Hitler revived his hate sending V1 and V2 rockets onto London. There was to be no rapid surrender of the Nazi regime. The German forces and cities were bombed, and otherwise, slowly overcome by the Allied forces. Victory in Europe VE day came on 8 May 1945. The aftermath in Germany, and other occupied countries, was horrific. Their living conditions were so bad for them with everything decimated and employment difficult to find. It took decades for the world to get over WW2. Peace was not as great as people had dreamt about over the war years! Hard Ending describes the events that are taking place within the Country and beyond alongside a narrative of Peter’s experiences living in Midhurst. Hard Ending is available from the Midhurst museum for £15</image:caption>

<image:caption>Dawn West Cansfield, Andreya Cameron and James McInnes The Stedham Churchyard Survey team has surveyed and recorded all the memorials in the two churchyards of St James’s Church in Stedham. Building on the work of two earlier surveys from 1969 and 2005, the team recorded the memorials using a standardised method of archaeological survey and analysis devised by Discovering English Burials (DEBS), which is supported by historic England. The team collected data on each memorial including the location, type of headstone, material, dimensions, orientation, decoration and inscriptions. Stedham Stories builds on this work and adds genealogical and local historical research to find out more about the people who lived and worked in the village during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The book comes into the twentieth century with stories about the famous Stedham band, the publicans and the men who were casualties during the First World War. <image:caption>Peter Sydenham Three-and-a-half-year-old Peter Sydenham was evacuated to Midhurst after his road in London had been bombed during the blitz in late 1940. At first, Peter lived without his mother in a room in the St Ann’s Hill building, but when Sheep Lane was hit by a bomb in 1943, he was forced to move to Easebourne and then to Red Lion Street before moving back to London when the war was over. Lowest Times is the eagerly awaited third volume of Peter Sydenham’s memoirs, following on from the enjoyable A Place Close to my Home and Nazis Storm Clouds. Peter provides a history of the War during the early 1940s at a time when Britons were beginning to realise that Nazi Germany could actually invade them. Britain had hastened onto a war footing; asking Canada for caretaker troops, evacuating children from bombing targets, setting up personal air raid protections, introducing rationing and creating a new Home Guard. Lowest Times describes the events that are taking place within the Country and beyond alongside a narrative of his experiences living in Midhurst. <image:title>Peter Sydenham v2 - Midhurst Memoirs Vol 2 Evil Rising: Good Awakening</image:title>
<image:caption>Peter Sydenham Understanding the Midhurst District in WW2 needs appreciation of how WW2 formed over the 1930s. Hitler's rise to absolute power by 1933 started his insane plan to build a 1000 year Third German Reich by heinous means, including educating German boys to become dispensable soldiers, and the nation's girls to be mothers of his master race. Evil Rising: Good Awakening is the second volume in Peter Sydenham’s World War 2 memoirs and explores how Hitler brought about WW2 through dishonest political manoeuvring, and military force not seen before. Why did Britain hold back its condemnation and retaliation? Who were the Good and the Evil combatants as the world was dragged back into all-out war? Peter Sydenham digs deep to explain the impact of war on life in the Midhurst District as war was developing. German Fascism was operating just a few miles away. Goering and Ribbentrop are said to have come to town! Who were the forgotten local heroes?</image:caption>

      <image:title>Peter Sydenham v1 - Midhurst Memoirs Vol 1 A Place Close to my Heart</image:title>
<image:caption>Peter Sydenham By British town standards, Midhurst in West Sussex was always a sleepy place, becoming that way due to its enviable geographical position in award winning rural countryside. World War 2 filled it with troops and evacuees. In readiness for the war time memoirs to come, this first book of a series on Midhurst during World War 2, tells of interesting happenings as it delves into the back stories of the area’s history. Extensive research and scholarly professionalism by Peter Sydenham integrates a surprising amount of all but lost material, showing its place in helping win that wat and how ‘it is a place to be’.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Madge - Madge Turner – The Chichester Suffragist</image:title>
<image:caption>Nichola Court Madge Turner – The Chichester Suffragist This is the story of a brave and determined woman who spent her life campaigning for the rights of women and children both nationally and internationally. West Sussex Record Office Archivist Nichola Court has spent many years researching Ethel Margaret Turner, always known as Madge, who was born in Chichester in 1884. Madge’s lifelong activism began in Chichester, where she co-founded a women’s Liberal group in 1905 and spoke during the 1906 General Election campaign in support of women’s suffrage. She joined the Women’s Freedom League (WFL) soon after its founding in 1907, a militant but non-violent suffrage organisation. In February 1909, she was elected to carry the Easebourne based West Sussex branch’s banner at a march on Downing Street. She was arrested for ‘wilfully obstructing the police in their duty’ and sentenced to 14 days imprisonment in Holloway. The experience strengthened her commitment to “the cause,” and she spoke publicly about it in meetings across Sussex. Described as a “brave and tenacious speaker,” Madge went on to become a paid WFL organiser, setting up branch shops, canvassing, and arranging campaigns in Gloucester, London, and Scotland – where she coordinated the influential Clyde Campaigns. After the First World War, her focus shifted to broader social justice. In 1919, she was appointed Assistant Secretary and Librarian to the Association for Moral and Social Hygiene (AMSH), which campaigned against child exploitation, prostitution, and trafficking of young girls. She worked there for the rest of her life and eventually became Secretary in 1941, a post she held until retiring in 1945 three years before she died. Copies of Madge Turner are available from the West Sussex Records Office, the Oxmarket Gallery and from the Chichester Women’s History Group for £10 plus £3.50 postage and packing</image:caption>

<image:caption>Vicky Harrison Where the Mud teaches you who you are. Somewhere between mile 40 and 150 the mud feels like its trying to pull you under and the finish line feels like a rumour. I’ve been there caught between exhaustion and the urge to turn back. But that’s where the magic begins. When every step feels impossible, you discover the reserves you didn’t know you had. One more step is always there if you look for it. Between the challenges of the Sussex Hospices Trail, I was also training for – and completing – Ultra Marathons to raise money for charity. Those miles weren’t separate journeys; they were all part of the same commitment to push through for a cause that matters. My 200-mile trek wasn’t just an endurance test – it was a lesson in gratitude. Even in the snow, rain and the kind of cold that bites, I’m reminded how lucky I am to move through this landscape at all. Every stop forward is a celebration of life. Come with me through the wind, the rain, and the mud. The toughest paths lead to the most beautiful views-and reveal the strongest parts of who we are. Coat on Coat off Muddy Boots by Vicky Harrison is available in paperback format from multiple retail outlets in Midhurst and the surrounding villages priced £20. £1 from the sale of each physical book will be donated to both the Friends of Sussex Hospices and to Midhurst Palliative Care.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Stephanie Norgate Stephanie Norgate’s recently published novel Hartisborne, a love-letter to the power of nature and reading, is based on the village of Selborne and is inspired by the village’s most famous resident, the clergyman and naturalist, Gilbert White. In 1763, ecologist Gil strives to write the natural history of his village Hartisborne but is distracted by love for his weeding woman Mary and his desire to save her from the parish overseer. In 1963, war orphan Georgie is obsessed with The Natural History of Hartisborne - a now world-famous book and her only inheritance – and with its writer, Gil, even though he lived two centuries ago. Escaping her controlling uncle and an unworthy love affair, Georgie arrives in the village of her dreams only to discover a conflicted rural community, where an old lady is haunted by dissolute monks and visions of women's suffering. And where not everyone loves Gil’s legacy. Can Gil and Georgie save each other, when they meet in the time-trapping woodland of Hartisborne? <image:title>Tania - A Midhurst Flying Field</image:title>
<image:caption>Tania Pons During the Second World War, RNAS Cowdray Park (1941-1945) was a well-kept secret. Deliberately left off aeronautical chart, it appeared to be a working farm, yet it was a place where up to twenty-five Fleet Air Arm aircraft (including the Fairey Swordfish and Supermarine Walrus) were stored and serviced at any one time, hidden from the prying eyes of the Luftwaffe. After the conflict the site was returned to the Cowdray Estate, and today polo is played there during the summer months. Drawing on interviews with Cowdray park veterans, former Air Training Corps cadets and wartime residents, this meticulously researched book explores the all but forgotten story of a most unusual naval air station and the impact it had on the local community during the war. <image:title>Peter Sydenham - Midhurst Memoirs An Evacuee’s Story</image:title>
<image:caption>Peter Sydenham This booklet gives the story-line of Peter Sydenham’s experiences as an evacuee taken from London to Midhurst by his mother in 1940. This short account was used as the starting point of Peter’s four volume set of Midhurst Memoirs that document a detailed history of the Midhurst Rural District at that time. This booklet is the companion guide and gives Peter’s own story which was initially presented to the Midhurst Society in a talk in 2014.</image:caption>

<image:title>Midhurst Then and Now - Midhurst Town - Then and Now</image:title>
<image:caption>Vic and Barbara Mitchell The basic street plan of Midhurst remains almost unaltered since the first map makers recorded if many centuries ago. The earliest habitation was on the highest land where the narrowest roads exist today. Later development was in much wider streets, including North Street and Bepton Road as examples. Only a small number of changes have taken place in the buildings of the town centre, partly due to the fact that the bombs that fell on Midhurst during the last war were few in number and that the pressures for change that have influenced other towns have not been present here. In Midhurst Town - Then and Now, Vic and Barbara Mitchell have attempted to reveal the change (and sometimes lack of change!) that has taken place within the parish during the photographic era, but including a proportion of modern views which enables readers to make a comparison without leaving their armchairs.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Lumberjills - Lumberjills</image:title>
<image:caption>Joanna Foat When war was declared in 1939, Britain was almost completely dependent on imported timber – but only had seven months of it stockpiled. Timber was critical to the war effort: it was needed for everything from aircraft and shipbuilding to communications and coal mining. The British timber trade was in trouble. Enter the Lumberjills. Lacking in both men and timber, the government made a choice. Reluctantly, they opened lumber work for women to apply – and apply they did. The Women’s Timber Corps had thousands of members who would prove themselves as strong and as smart as any man: they felled and crosscut trees by hand, operated sawmills, and ran whole forestry sites. They may not have been on the front line, but they fought their own battles on the home front for respect and equality. And in the midst of heavy labour and wartime, they lived a life, making firm friends and even finding soulmates. In Lumberjills, researcher Joanna Foat tells their story for the first time, and gives them the recognition they so truly deserve.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Happy Traveller - The Happy Traveller</image:title>
<image:caption>Frank Tatchell Frank Tatchell was the popular vicar of Midhurst between 1906 and 1935 and in 1923 he published his book The Happy Traveller, which he described as A’ Book for Poor Men’. For two or three months of the year he paid a curate to take his services while he went on his travels, carrying only an umbrella and a small black bag; he bought new clothes abroad when he needed then rather than taking them with him. By 1923 he had already been found times round the earth and his book of advice for young adventurers, The Happy Traveller, was said to have been one of the best of its kind ever written. There are sections dealing with Europe, Russia, the West indies, North America and the South Seas. He recorded useful phrases, explained local customs and provided good advice on a range of topics. He urged his readers to “set out while you are young and keen and poor” and hoped that they would have as much fun travelling as he did. The Happy Traveller is out of print, but copies are regularly available at Wheelers Bookshop in Midhurst.</image:caption>
