Cowdray
Matilda Reid, Tania Pons, David Ray and Julia Eastwood
The story of Cowdray provides a fascinating historical insight into the Pearson family, charting its progress from Weetman Dickinson Pearson, a leading industrialist and liberal politician, who was created a baronet in 1894; raised to the peerage as Baron Cowdray in 1910 before being elevated to a Viscountcy in 1917. Pearson bought the estate from the Eighth Earl of Egmont in 1909 and this beautifully illustrated book documents the other families who have owned the land surrounding the ruins since the first historical reference to Cowdray in the thirteenth century.
The story comes right up to date with a description of the individual components of the Cowdray estate, including the Polo Club, the Golf Club, the Farm Shop and Cafe and how the estate is managed on a sustainable basis to ensure its survival for generations to come.
Cowdray is available from the Cowdray Living Shop and the Midhurst Museum.
