A History of the Post Office in Midhurst
Claire Nicholas
Midhurst born author and heritage researcher Claire, has a personal connection with Midhurst Post Office, as several members of her family have worked there.
Claire summarizes the development and location of the postal service in Midhurst, from its early days at long forgotten sites, such as The Spread Eagle and the Co-op to its current location on the Grange Road. Her account of the history of the Post Office is detailed and includes meticulous research on postal rates and the design changes of postage stamps. The book is well illustrated with photos of staff, Post Office sites and post boxes through the ages. Her account is enriched by personal memories and stories from employees (including some passed down from previous generations), of their work lives and their lives outside work, which draws the reader in.
If you are interested in the history of the Post Office and or in people's memories of Midhurst, then this is a book to add to your collection.
