Midhurst Town - Then and Now

Vic and Barbara Mitchell

The basic street plan of Midhurst remains almost unaltered since the first map makers recorded if many centuries ago. The earliest habitation was on the highest land where the narrowest roads exist today. Later development was in much wider streets, including North Street and Bepton Road as examples.

Only a small number of changes have taken place in the buildings of the town centre, partly due to the fact that the bombs that fell on Midhurst during the last war were few in number and that the pressures for change that have influenced other towns have not been present here.

In Midhurst Town - Then and Now, Vic and Barbara Mitchell have attempted to reveal the change (and sometimes lack of change!) that has taken place within the parish during the photographic era, but including a proportion of modern views which enables readers to make a comparison without leaving their armchairs.
