Stedham Stories
Dawn West Cansfield, Andreya Cameron and James McInnes
The Stedham Churchyard Survey team has surveyed and recorded all the memorials in the two churchyards of St James’s Church in Stedham.
Building on the work of two earlier surveys from 1969 and 2005, the team recorded the memorials using a standardised method of archaeological survey and analysis devised by Discovering English Burials (DEBS), which is supported by historic England.
The team collected data on each memorial including the location, type of headstone, material, dimensions, orientation, decoration and inscriptions.
Stedham Stories builds on this work and adds genealogical and local historical research to find out more about the people who lived and worked in the village during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The book comes into the twentieth century with stories about the famous Stedham band, the publicans and the men who were casualties during the First World War.
